Why HyCoSy?

HyCoSy (hystero-salpingo contrast sonography) is an ultrasound technique developed to assess whether the fallopian tubes are open or blocked.

Some cases of infertility are due to the woman’s tubes being blocked. The fallopian tubes plays a crucial role in reproduction.

Will this help me fall pregnant?

Having a HyCoSy procedure has been shown to increase the rate of falling pregnant. No one is entirely sure why tubal flushing increases your pregnancy odds. It is thought that the fallopian tubes are cleared and Will this help me fall pregnant blockages removed.

Will it hurt?

Most women experience only mild discomfort. Others may experience period-type cramping during the procedure. This can be minimised by taking two tablets of an anti-inflammatory medication such as Nurofen, Brufen or Naprogesic one hour before the procedure. Women who are unable to take anti-inflammatory medications may substitute by taking Panadol.

Dr Paul Lowenstein

Dr Paul Lowenstein is a Consultant Radiologist and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Radiologists.

He specialises in Women's imaging, including breast cancer and pelvic MRI for endometriosis. Paul has developed particular expertise in the field of Fertility Imaging. Over the last 10 years he has performed thousands of HyCoSy studies. Paul is actively involved in teaching medical students from the University of Sydney and Notre Dame Medical School.

In the fertility field he has co-authored articles published in respected medical journals as well as a poster presented at a Specialist Fertility conference:

Outside of work he enjoys cycling, cooking and spending time with his family.
